Not only is Avalon House one of the best hostels in Dublin, it has been ranked as one of the top hostels in all of Europe. It is consistently recommended by guide books and by previous guests alike. The hostel is a quick five minute walk from the popular Temple Bar, where all of Dublin comes out to play at night, and the building itself is Victorian (it used to house a medical school!) and listed with the city as having “outstanding architectural merit.” In other words, guests can sleep in a beautiful building while enjoying a beautiful city.
The rooms at Avalon House are either dorm style rooms or smaller rooms (singles, twins, or quads) - the hostel can hold more than 280 people at a time. You might think that would mean you would get lost in the shuffle, but the staff at the Avalon House are pros - they are very good at making everyone feel at home and taken care of, no matter how many people are there. Most of the rooms at the hostel even have en suite bathroom facilities, which can be quite a luxury in hostels.
Some of the amenities you will find at Avalon House are:
One of the best ways to save money when traveling is to find a hostel with some free amenities - and Avalon House has several. First of all, your linens are provided (you just need to supply the towels). Then you get a free continental breakfast to start your day right. And getting on the internet will not cost you anything, either, because it is free for guests - so you can send a note home telling everyone how great Dublin is. On top of all that, you can cook your own meals in the fully equipped kitchen and save even more cash. Of course, you will spend it all at the pubs in Temple Bar, but that is what the money is for, right?
Avalon House provides an excellent place to relax and get away from the chaos that is Temple Bar, but is still close enough to stumble home after a long night without getting lost. It has been a fixture in Dublin’s hostel scene for years, and it is easy to see why it rates so highly with those who have stayed there before.
