St. Clair Hotel

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver the St. Clair Hotel is an historic building with tons of character. The building is one block from the Skytrain, three blocks from the Seabus and Library, and in an area that is popular with international visitors and students alike. Most of what you will want to see and do in Vancouver is within walking distance. The hotel was built in 1911 by the captain of the Empress of Japan Canadian Pacific Steamships and so the entire building has a nautical theme. At least here you will not get seasick, however.

Rooms at the St. Clair Hotel vary in size, but all are private rooms. They range from sleeping one to three people, with everything from the usual twin or double beds to bunk beds, and although each has a sink in the room the bathroom facilities are shared. There are bathrooms on every floor of the building for your convenience. So while a private room might feel like a splurge, these private rooms are meant for backpackers and budget travelers.

Some of the amenities you will find at St. Clair Hotel are:

  • Free linens and towels
  • Laundry facilities
  • TV room

The St. Clair Hotel’s three floors have recently been renovated, so you can have all of the historic charm plus the modern amenities. The hallways feature pictures of passenger liners, in keeping with the building’s history, and the newly refurbished wood floors throughout the entire hotel will make you think of a bygone era. This is not a party hostel, but the staff is welcoming and friendly and happy to assist you with whatever travel questions you have - from restaurant recommendations to visitor’s tips for Vancouver’s sights, they are ready to help.

Sleep at the St. Clair Hotel in a building surrounded by history, where passengers on ocean liners have rested their heads for nearly 100 years. And do it all on a backpacker’s budget. What could be better?
